Jonathan Calvert, Ph.D.

Jonathan Calvert is an incoming tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, Davis. He received his Bachelors of Science in Bioengineering with minors in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering & Physiology at the Mayo Clinic under the mentorship of Dr. Kendall Lee. His doctoral research focused on evaluating spinal neuromodulation techniques to restore motor function in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury. His postdoctoral work at Brown University was performed under Dr. David Borton and focused on the development of intelligent spinal interfaces to perform bidirectional communication across spinal cord injury lesions.

Jonathan’s current research is focused on developing precision neurorehabilitation approaches to restore sensory and motor function to individuals with neural dysfunction. His research to date has been funded by the NIH, VA, and DARPA, and he recently received a $1.1 million Career Development Award, Level 2 from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
